Researchers analyzed data from 3,116 children with pneumonia who received different doses of vitamin A supplements. They compared how well low, medium, and high doses worked at reducing symptoms.

They found that medium-dose vitamin A supplementation was most effective at shortening both fever duration and cough duration in these children. Low-to-medium doses were consistently linked with better overall clinical outcomes than high-dose regimens.

The evidence has important limitations. The analysis had high variability between studies and relied on indirect comparisons between dose groups rather than direct head-to-head trials. Safety information was poorly reported, so we don't have clear data on potential side effects.

This suggests that if vitamin A is used for children with pneumonia, medium doses might work better than high doses, but more research with direct comparisons is needed to be sure. Parents should talk with their child's doctor about any supplement use.

What this means for you:
Medium vitamin A doses may help pneumonia symptoms in children, but evidence has limitations.
