If you have rheumatoid arthritis, you know methotrexate is a cornerstone treatment. But what's the real-world toll of its stomach-related side effects? A new analysis pooled data from 37 studies involving nearly 20,000 patients to find out just how common these issues are.

The review found that nausea was the most frequent problem, affecting an estimated 24% of patients. Abdominal pain wasn't far behind, reported by about 20% of people. For some, these gastrointestinal issues were severe enough to make them stop taking the drug altogether; the analysis estimated about 8.5% of patients discontinued methotrexate because of stomach problems.

It's important to understand the limits of this picture. The researchers note there was 'substantial heterogeneity' across the studies—meaning the reported rates of nausea and pain varied a great deal from one study to the next. This variation makes pinning down one exact number tricky. The findings don't establish that methotrexate causes these issues, only that they are frequently reported together. What the analysis clearly shows is that these are common experiences that need attention to help people stay on their treatment.

What this means for you:
Nausea and stomach pain are frequent for RA patients on methotrexate, sometimes leading them to stop treatment.
