Key Takeaway
Recognize 71 facilitators and 59 barriers to physical activity in middle-aged and older adults living with HIV.

This systematic review synthesizes qualitative studies on facilitators and barriers to physical activity in middle-aged and older adults living with HIV. The review included 9 articles and did not report a specific setting or follow-up duration. No adverse events or discontinuations were reported in the included studies.

The authors identified 71 facilitators and 59 barriers to physical activity. These findings highlight the complex factors influencing activity levels in this specific demographic. The review does not provide pooled effect sizes or quantitative comparisons because the source material consists of qualitative data.

The authors emphasize that there is a need to deeply understand the actual situation of this population. Focus should be placed on the core elements affecting physical activity to improve the health of middle-aged and older adults living with HIV. This approach aims to help address the global issue of HIV and aging. The review notes that further understanding is required to effectively implement interventions.

PurposeThis study aims to objectively evaluate and synthesize qualitative studies on the facilitators and barriers to PA among middle-aged and older adults living with HIV.MethodsA systematic search was conducted in four databases—Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, and CINAHL—covering the period from January 2000 to December 2024. The included studies were qualitatively reviewed according to the Enhancing Transparency in Reporting the Synthesis of Qualitative Research (ENTREQ) guidelines. A meta-aggregative approach was used to summarize and categorize the identified facilitators and barriers.ResultsA total of 9 articles were included in the study, identifying 71 facilitators and 59 barriers. These factors were categorized into two main themes and seven sub-themes.ConclusionPA among middle-aged and older adults living with HIV is influenced by multiple factors. There is a need to deeply understand the actual situation of this population and focus on the core elements affecting PA in order to improve the health of middle-aged and older adults living with HIV and help address the global issue of HIV and aging.Systematic review registrationIdentifier: CRD42024498010.
