Living with cognitive decline makes everyday tasks feel harder. New research suggests that creative outlets, specifically visual art therapy, might offer a helpful way to manage these challenges. The study looked at how making art affects the minds of older adults.
Researchers found that participants who engaged in visual art therapy showed significant improvements in global cognitive function. They also performed better on tests for verbal fluency and naming ability. Perhaps most importantly for daily life, those who practiced art saw improvements in their ability to perform activities of daily living.
While the results are promising, it is important to note that some findings were based on a small number of studies. Because of this, the evidence for specific areas like naming and verbal fluency is currently considered low or very low certainty. However, the data suggests art therapy could be a helpful addition to current care plans.
