A new review of 28 peer-reviewed publications, representing 24 independent study samples, suggests that resistance training, or weight lifting, can improve cognitive performance in older adults. The review looked at how different intensities of resistance training affect brain health, including thinking skills, memory, and processing speed.
The findings show that low-, moderate-, and high-intensity resistance training can all improve cognitive performance and markers of brain health, such as neurotrophic factors, inflammation, and cerebral blood flow. However, moderate-intensity training, defined as 60% to 79% of a person's one-repetition maximum, showed the most consistent benefits across studies.
While these results are encouraging, the review notes that direct comparisons between intensities are limited. More research is needed to determine the optimal training prescriptions and long-term effects. The review did not report any safety concerns, but it's always a good idea to check with a doctor before starting a new exercise program.
For older adults looking to support their brain health, this review suggests that moderate-intensity resistance training, like lifting weights or using resistance bands, may be a helpful strategy.
