Inclusion Criteria

Born 1930 or later
Type 1 diabetes
Nonproliferative retinopathy
Normal serum creatinine
Unsatisfactory blood glucose control

Exclusion Criteria

Alcohol/drug abuse
Proliferative retinopathy
