A review of existing data looked at the relationship between Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) and dental health in children and adolescents. The study specifically measured the number of decayed, missing, or filled teeth in permanent teeth to see if those with T1DM faced higher risks.
The results showed that children with Type 1 Diabetes had a higher number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth compared to children without the condition. However, a specific type of analysis called Mendelian randomization did not find a statistically significant causal link between having Type 1 Diabetes and the overall prevalence of dental caries.
Because the evidence on the exact cause is not clear, these findings are not used to change standard medical practices. While the data shows a link between the condition and more cavities, it does not prove that the diabetes itself causes the decay. Parents and children with Type 1 Diabetes should continue to follow standard dental care advice.
