Living with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, or ME/CFS, is exhausting. It often comes with a variety of physical symptoms that can make daily life difficult. New research highlights a specific connection between this chronic fatigue and another common condition: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Researchers looked at the data and found that people with ME/CFS have significantly higher odds of having IBS compared to others. Specifically, about 37% of people with ME/CFS also reported having irritable bowel issues. This suggests that these two conditions often go hand in hand for those struggling with chronic fatigue.
While the link is clear, it is important to remember that this study shows an association rather than a direct cause. The data also showed a lot of variation in how often IBS appeared across different groups. Because we cannot say one condition causes the other yet, patients should talk to their doctor about managing both symptoms together.
