Living with heart failure often means managing multiple health risks at once. One of the biggest concerns for these patients is how their kidneys will hold up over time. A large analysis of data from nearly 35,000 adults looked at whether a specific medication called sacubitril/valsartan could offer better protection for the kidneys compared to standard treatments.
The results showed that patients taking this medication had a lower risk of significant kidney decline and fewer instances of severe kidney issues. Specifically, the study found that the drug helped slow down the annual loss of kidney function. While the data showed a trend toward preventing end-stage kidney disease, this specific finding was not statistically certain because of how different studies defined the condition.
Because different trials used different ways to measure kidney health, some results are harder to pin down than others. However, the overall evidence suggests that this medication may provide a protective effect for the kidneys in people with heart failure. Talk to your doctor about how these findings might apply to your specific treatment plan.
