Living with Multiple Sclerosis means dealing with a complex condition that affects the brain and nervous system. To better understand how the disease behaves, researchers looked at specific types of brain lesions, which are areas of damage visible on MRI scans. They specifically looked at slowly expanding lesions (SELs) and paramagnetic rim lesions (PRLs).
In a study of 4,786 patients, researchers found that 78% of people with Multiple Sclerosis had at least one slowly expanding lesion. These specific lesions made up about 14% of all T2 lesions found in the scans. The study also noted that these lesions appeared in similar proportions for both relapsing-remitting and progressive forms of the disease.
While these findings help map out how inflammation behaves in the brain, the data comes with some notes of caution. The researchers mentioned that different ways of identifying these lesions and different timing of MRI scans could affect the results. They also noted a partial overlap between certain types of lesions, which helps show how chronic inflammation works in the body.
