A large review of multiple studies suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonists, a class of drugs used for type 2 diabetes, may also help protect the brain. These medications include popular drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. The review looked at dozens of earlier studies and found that people taking these drugs showed less decline in overall cognitive function and performed better on memory and learning tests.

The analysis combined results from many smaller studies, which strengthens the findings. However, the results were not consistent across all cognitive tests. Some measures showed clear improvement, while others did not reach statistical significance. This means the evidence is promising but not yet definitive.

It is important to note that this was a review of reviews, not a single large trial. The original studies varied in design and quality. The authors caution that more research is needed, especially larger controlled trials, to confirm these effects and understand which cognitive abilities are most affected.

For now, these findings add to growing evidence that GLP-1 drugs may have benefits beyond blood sugar control. If you have type 2 diabetes and are concerned about memory or thinking, talk to your doctor. Do not start or stop any medication based on this review alone.

What this means for you:
GLP-1 drugs may help slow cognitive decline, but more research is needed.
