Medical experts recently reviewed several studies to see how N-acetylcysteine, also known as NAC, helps people with lung issues. They looked at how this supplement works for conditions like COPD, asthma, and cystic fibrosis. The group reached an agreement on several key uses for this treatment.

For people with COPD, especially those with chronic bronchitis, taking 600 mg twice daily may help prevent flare-ups. The experts also found that NAC might help patients recover faster after a sudden worsening of their symptoms. In cases of tuberculosis, the supplement appears safe and may help limit lung damage by reducing stress on cells.

For patients with bronchiectasis who have frequent lung problems, NAC might reduce the number of flare-ups. In people with cystic fibrosis, the supplement can improve how well the lungs work and help clear mucus more easily. It may also help break up the sticky layers of bacteria that cause infections.

However, the experts noted that there is not enough evidence to recommend using NAC for asthma or interstitial lung disease. While the supplement was found to be safe and easy to take, more research is needed to confirm its benefits for tuberculosis and other respiratory infections.

What this means for you:
NAC may help prevent lung flare-ups and improve mucus clearance in certain chronic respiratory conditions.
