A review of 18 different studies looked at how community-based programs affect the mental health of fathers during the perinatal period. These programs included peer support, education, and technology-assisted tools delivered in group or individual settings.
While the results for standard mental health scores were mixed, the evidence showed clear benefits in other areas. Fathers who participated in these programs reported better social connections, stronger feelings of belonging, and more confidence in their roles as parents. They also reported improved communication with partners and a stronger sense of identity as fathers.
Because this review included various types of studies, the evidence for specific mental health improvements is still limited. However, the findings suggest that programs focusing on social connection and confidence may be very helpful. These results show that supporting a father's sense of belonging can be an important part of his journey into parenthood.
