Dental plaque: what the trials found

Several studies evaluated the efficacy of various agents in managing dental plaque. Triclosan combined with fluoride was shown to significantly impact both dental plaque scores and gingivitis scores across multiple trials [5, 6]. Specifically, one study reported significant reductions in plaque scores (1.84; 1.86; 2.37, p<0.001) and gingivitis scores (1.17; 1.18; 1.85, p<0.001) 6, while another showed significant results for both plaque and gingivitis scores in a triclosan/fluoride formulation 5.

Fluoride-based interventions demonstrated consistent effects on dental plaque indices across multiple trials. Significant reductions were observed in plaque index values in studies utilizing fluoride alone [10, 14, 17, 21], while sodium monofluorophosphate was also shown to impact gingival margin plaque index 15. Additionally, a study using iodine showed significant improvements in the plaque index (2.47; 2.11, p=0.05) and gingival indices 13.

Specific formulations like Colgate Cavity Protection toothpaste were shown to significantly reduce dental plaque scores 3. Research into the chemical environment of plaque found that triclosan and fluoride maintained a specific pH after sucrose challenge (4.88; 5.04; 4.98, p=0.05) 9.
