What the trials found For clinicians

Dentin Hypersensitivity: what the trials found

Fluoro-Calcium-Phospho-Silicate based dentifrices demonstrated statistically significant reductions in pain response across multiple stimuli. Specifically, these products showed significant percent changes in mean scores for pain response from baseline when tested with Schiff Cold Air Sensitivity Scale (air blast), Visual Analog Scale (mechanical stimulus), and Visual Analog Scale (water jet) 1.

A combination of Triclosan, Silicon dioxide, and fluoride was found to significantly reduce hypersensitivity. This was evidenced by significant reductions in tactile hypersensitivity (Yeaple Probe) and air blast hypersensitivity at the 4-week mark 2.

Recent results — preliminary, needs further review

  • Potassium Nitrate showed a reduction in mean Schiff Sensitivity Scores from baseline at Day 3 and Day 7, but these findings are not yet corroborated 3.
  • 3M Clinpro Fluoride Aqueous Solution showed a reduction in pain from baseline at 24 hours, 7 days, and 21 days post-application, but these findings are not yet corroborated 4.
  • Stannous fluoride toothpaste was evaluated for dentin hypersensitivity, but results are not yet corroborated 5.
  • Cyanoacrylate was evaluated for dentin hypersensitivity, but results are not yet corroborated 6.

For the clinician treating this condition

  • Fluoro-Calcium-Phospho-Silicate based dentifrices are effective in reducing pain responses across air blast, mechanical, and water jet stimuli 1.
  • A combination of Triclosan, Silicon dioxide, and fluoride provides significant reduction in both tactile and air blast hypersensitivity 2.
