Pancreatic Cancer: what the trials found

The addition of TTFields to the combination of Gemcitabine and Nab-paclitaxel significantly improved overall survival compared to chemotherapy alone (16.20 vs 14.16 months, p=0.039) 1. However, this combination did not show statistically significant improvements in progression-free survival or local progression-free survival compared to the control group 1.

Other established interventions include Gemcitabine [2, 15], Dalteparin 19, and sunitinib; the latter showed objective response rates of 21.3% to 28.9% by investigator assessment and 52.5% to 55.6% by independent radiological review 20.

Additional established interventions include arginine/lysine, which demonstrated specific changes in serum potassium levels and blood gas parameters over 24 hours 21, and Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Magnetic Resonance Imaging 22.

Recent results — preliminary, needs further review

  • Paricalcitol (Zemplar) was associated with a significant reduction in serum levels of Carbohydrate Antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) (p=0.001) 5.
  • Acupuncture therapy was evaluated for managing chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) and related symptoms such as pain, fatigue, nausea, and anxiety 16.
  • Paclitaxel Protein Bound (Abraxane) showed a statistically significant improvement in R0 resectability rates (p=0.017), though it did not significantly impact CA 19-9 normalization or pathologic complete response rate 7.
  • Vemurafenib was associated with specific percentage changes in plasma levels of Phospho-ERK and Phospho-AKT 11.

For the clinician treating this condition

  • TTFields combined with Gemcitabine and Nab-paclitaxel provides a statistically significant survival benefit over chemotherapy alone, though it does not currently show a significant impact on progression-free metrics.
  • Paricalcitol is associated with a significant reduction in CA19-9 levels.
  • Abraxane showed a significant improvement in R0 resectability rates despite non-significant results for other markers like pathologic complete response.

Questions about Pancreatic Cancer

Is there a link between Periodontal Disease and pancreatic cancer in older adults?

Yes, research suggests periodontal disease is linked to a higher risk of pancreatic cancer in older adults, possibly due to chronic inflammation and oral bacteria.

Full answer →
Does the protein OTUD7B promote the growth of tumors in pancreatic cancer?

Yes, OTUD7B promotes pancreatic cancer growth by stabilizing oncoproteins and activating signaling pathways like Notch and EGFR/MAPK.

Full answer →
Is EGCG a potential treatment for digestive system diseases like pancreatic cancer?

EGCG shows promise against pancreatic cancer in lab and animal studies, but human trials are lacking, so it is not yet a proven treatment.

Full answer →
What environmental factors and genetic risks contribute to the development of pancreatic cancer?

Pancreatic cancer risk comes from modifiable factors like smoking, obesity, and heavy drinking, plus inherited mutations in genes such as BRCA1/2 and PALB2.

Full answer →
Can DNA damage response inhibitors overcome drug resistance in pancreatic cancer?

Yes, DNA damage response inhibitors can help overcome drug resistance in pancreatic cancer, especially when combined with other therapies, but single-agent use has limitations.
