Allergic conjunctivitis: what the trials found

Reproxalap Ophthalmic Solution (0.25%) has been evaluated for the management of allergic conjunctivitis, demonstrating a reduction in subject-reported ocular itching scores in both allergy chamber settings [1, 18] and clinical assessments where significant portions of patients achieved a two-point reduction in itching scores 22.

Antihistamines and mast cell stabilizers are frequently utilized; Olopatadine hydrochloride (0.1% and 0.2%) demonstrated reductions in patient-assessed ocular itching in both environmental exposure chambers and conjunctival allergen provocation tests 13, while Alcaftadine 0.25% was evaluated for its ability to limit itching scores following allergen challenge [10, 12]. Other agents such as Bilastine Ophthalmic Solution 0.6% showed statistically significant results in reducing ocular itching 17, and bepotastine besilate (1.5%) demonstrated changes in ocular itching at 14 days 5.

Corticosteroids, including Dexamethasone (0.1% and 0.4mg) and Prednisolone (1% and Acetate 1%), are established interventions for managing conjunctival inflammation and itching [6, 7, 11, 19]. Additionally, combination therapies involving Briminidine Tartrate and Ketotifen Fumarate have been investigated in Phase 3 trials [20, 21].
