Open-angle glaucoma: what the trials found

Pharmacological management for open-angle glaucoma includes several classes of agents. Beta-blocker monotherapy demonstrated a significant reduction in mean intraocular pressure (IOP) at 8 AM compared to baseline (-25.36% vs -4.71%, p<0.0001) 5. Prostaglandin analogs such as travoprost showed high rates of patients reaching target IOP goals (≤18 mmHg) in both standard and BAK-free formulations [16, 21, 22].

Combination therapies involving Brinzolamide and brimonidine or briminidine consistently demonstrated significant reductions in mean diurnal IOP at week 6 compared to baseline (-24.7% and -22.27% respectively) [11, 13, 14]. Additionally, the Brinzolamide/timolol fixed combination was evaluated for its ability to reach target IOP goals 19.

Other established interventions include Netarsudil ophthalmic solution 4, Mitomycin-C injection 8, and various prostaglandin analogs like Bimatoprost [18, 20] and Monoprost 9.
