Respiratory Tract Infections: what the trials found

Vaccination with a Quadrivalent VLP Influenza Vaccine demonstrated high rates of seroprotection across multiple strains, with reported percentages ranging from 40.6% to 98.7% [5, 6, 7]. This vaccine also showed significant seroconversion rates (ranging from 15.5% to 73.3%) and consistent geometric mean fold rises in HI antibody responses [5, 6, 7].

Amoxicillin-clavulanate was associated with a statistically significant reduction in the distribution of children experiencing treatment failure for rhinosinusitis (p=0.003) 8. However, its impact on the Pediatric Rhinosinusitis Symptom Scale (PRSS) based on colored nasal discharge did not reach statistical significance (p=0.37) 8.

Recent results — preliminary, needs further review

  • Administration of aH5N6c on Day 1 resulted in varying geometric mean fold increases (GMFI) of HI antibodies against the H5N6 strain, with values ranging from 1.45 to 12.13 1.
  • Daily oral vitamin D3 (3,333 IU) was evaluated for its effect on lung function metrics including FEV1/FVC ratio and RV/TLC ratios 10.

For the clinician treating this condition

  • Quadrivalent VLP Influenza vaccines provide robust seroprotection across multiple strains as evidenced by high HI antibody response rates.
  • Amoxicillin-clavulanate is associated with a lower rate of treatment failure in pediatric rhinosinusitis patients compared to other groups.
