Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: what the trials found

Management of COPD involves various pharmacological and rehabilitative approaches. Clinical trials evaluated the impact of Roflumilast on exacerbation rates, finding no statistically significant difference in the rate of moderate or severe exacerbations per patient per year (p=0.1634) or those requiring hospitalization/death (p=0.6354). Additionally, there was no significant difference in the rate of exacerbations treated with antibiotics (p=0.0884).

Pharmacological interventions include corticosteroids and bronchodilators; for example, Prednisone was evaluated regarding treatment failure at 90 days 3, and Theophylline ER was associated with changes in St. George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) scores 4.
