Hypogonadism: what the trials found

Various testosterone delivery methods, including gels [2, 6], nasal gels 10, transdermal systems [8, 22], and injectable products [7, 15, 19], have been evaluated for the treatment of hypogonadism. Topical testosterone solutions demonstrated a significant increase in serum testosterone levels (p<0.001) with 94.7% of participants achieving normal levels 11. Oral testosterone undecanoate was also shown to reach eugonadal ranges in a majority of subjects 17.

Clinical improvements associated with testosterone therapy include significant increases in sexual arousal, interest, and drive (SAID scores) and improved energy diary (HED) scores 21. Additionally, transdermal systems were associated with increases in lean tissue mass 22, while transdermal gels showed a statistically significant increase in total lean body mass 18.
