Kidney Cancer: what the trials found

Nivolumab has demonstrated significant clinical benefits in the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma. In patients with intermediate/poor risk, Nivolumab showed a significantly higher objective response rate (41.6% vs 26.5%, p<0.0001), improved progression-free survival (11.56 months vs 8.38 months, p=0.0331), and superior overall survival (25.95 months vs NA, p<0.0001) 9. In another trial, Nivolumab showed a significant improvement in overall survival (25.00 vs 19.55, p=0.0018) and progression-free survival (4.21 vs 4.50, p=0.0340) 10.

Avelumab showed statistically significant improvements in progression-free survival for both PD-L1 positive participants (13.8 vs 7.2 months, p=0.0001) and all participants regardless of PD-L1 expression (13.8 vs 8.4 months, p=0.0002) 20.

Sunitinib malate demonstrated a significant improvement in disease-free survival (6.8 vs 5.6, p=0.030) when assessed by blinded independent central review 17. In contrast, Everolimus showed a progression-free survival of 2.8 to 8.0 months at 24 months following treatment after failure of first-line Sunitinib or Pazopanib 6.

Pazopanib demonstrated no significant difference in overall survival compared to placebo (89.5 vs NA, p=0.9880) 16. Sorafenib Tosylate showed no significant difference in disease-free survival (5.8; 6.1; 6.6, p=0.80) 15.
