Sinusitis: what the trials found

Several antibiotic regimens have been evaluated for rhinosinusitis. Amoxicillin-clavulanate demonstrated significant differences in treatment failure distribution based on the presence of pathogens (p=0.003) and showed varying mean PRSS scores over 10 days depending on pathogen status (p=0.02) ⁷. Other antibiotic trials included amoxicillin-potassium clavulanate ¹, standard dose amoxicillin/clavulanate ³, and moxifloxacin, the latter of which showed clinical improvement during therapy in a majority of subjects but had non-significant results for clinical cure at various follow-up points (p=0.189) ⁹.

Alternative pharmacological interventions include Mometasone Furoate monohydrate ⁵ and Dupilumab, which showed significant reductions in both Lund Mackay (LMK) scores (-6.63 vs -0.68) and Sinus Total Symptom Scores (sTSS) at week 24 ⁸.

Saline solution was shown to result in significantly higher rates of recovery from sinusitis per clinical assessment compared to other groups (p<0.05) ⁶. Doxycycline was evaluated for surgical referral, with varying numbers of patients recommended for surgery at 3 and 6 weeks ⁴.

Pulmozyme (dornase alfa) showed significant improvement in Chronic Sinusitis Survey Scores (p=0.003) but non-significant results for CT evidence of less sinus disease (p=0.2) ¹⁰.
