Smoking: what the trials found

Varenicline has demonstrated significant efficacy in reducing smoking prevalence at multiple time points. Specifically, a trial showed significantly lower point prevalence and prolonged smoking at both 12 weeks and 24 weeks compared to placebo 9. Additionally, Varenicline was associated with a higher number of participants achieving initial cessation within the first 7 days post-quit compared to other groups 7.

Nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) have been evaluated across various formats including patches and transdermal products. While specific outcomes for long-term abstinence were reported in some NRT studies, others showed no significant difference in self-reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence or latency to relapse when comparing different combinations of nicotine gum and patches 22. One study also assessed the usability and acceptability of a transdermal product 14.

Other pharmacological interventions include Bupropion, which was evaluated for smoking cessation [13, 20]. A trial involving active bupropion combined with counseling showed no significant difference in 7-day point prevalence abstinence at 6 months compared to other study arms 20. Additionally, Losartan was investigated regarding changes in emphysema on CT scans, but did not reach statistical significance 17.
