Retinal vein occlusion: what the trials found

Several anti-VEGF agents have demonstrated significant improvements in visual outcomes. Aflibercept showed a statistically significant increase in BCVA (p=<.0001) and a significant reduction in central retinal thickness (p=<.0001) at 24 weeks 12. Ranibizumab also demonstrated superior BCVA gains compared to sham treatment (p=<0.0001) 14. Additionally, KSI-301 showed statistically significant improvements in BCVA for both BRVO and all RVO patients at 24 weeks 7.

Corticosteroid treatments show varying results in visual outcomes. Dexamethasone implants demonstrated a higher percentage of patients achieving a 15-or-more letter improvement in BCVA compared to those experiencing a decrease 6, while other dexamethasone trials showed mixed distribution of BCVA changes [16, 17]. Triamcinolone injection was evaluated but did not show significant positive mean changes in ETDRS scores 15.

Minocycline has shown evidence for improving visual outcomes. In one study, patients receiving minocycline showed a mean improvement in BCVA of 13.0 compared to -2.0 in the placebo group at 12 months 21. Other trials evaluated various other interventions including pegaptanib 3, ranibizumab 11, and Ozurdex (which was associated with reductions in vasoactive proteins) [9, 10].
