Hip Osteoarthritis: what the trials found

Several biologic and pharmacological interventions have demonstrated efficacy in managing hip osteoarthritis symptoms. Tanezumab showed significant improvements in WOMAC pain subscale scores at week 16 9 and week 24 11, as well as improvements in physical function [11, 12]. Specifically, a 2.5 mg dose of Tanezumab resulted in statistically significant reductions in WOMAC pain and physical function scores at 16 weeks compared to placebo 12.

Fasinumab demonstrated significant improvements in WOMAC pain and physical function subscale scores over 24 weeks 13 and 16 weeks 14. Notably, a higher percentage of patients treated with Fasinumab achieved at least a 30% reduction in WOMAC pain scores compared to placebo 13.

Pharmacological management includes the use of Celecoxib, which significantly reduced the number of flare events and the time to the first occurrence of an osteoarthritis flare compared to other treatments 8. NSAIDs were also shown to result in statistically significant reductions in WOMAC pain subscale scores at 16 weeks 10.

Post-operative management findings include the use of bupivacaine, which was associated with lower opioid consumption during the first three days post-operatively 6, and isobaric bupivacaine, which was associated with higher percentages of patients ambulating early after spinal anesthesia 7. Other local interventions such as ropivacaine 4 and dexamethasone 5 were evaluated in surgical contexts.
