What the trials found Updated — new results For clinicians

Type 1 Diabetes: what the trials found

Clinical trials for Type 1 Diabetes have evaluated various pharmacological and delivery interventions. Insulin Glargine was assessed regarding Time-in-Range (TIR), time in hypoglycemia, and time in serious hypoglycemia; however, no statistically significant differences were observed between groups across these metrics 14.

Multiple daily injections using a combination of Insulin Degludec and Insulin Aspart showed varying results compared to the control group: the treatment group had higher time spent with glucose levels >180 mg/dL (46.3% vs 38.5%), lower time in hypoglycemia <70 mg/dl (3.9% vs 2.1%), and lower Time-in-Range (47.8% vs 56.5%) 19.

Rapid-acting insulin was evaluated for its impact on caregiver treatment adherence and glycemic variability, with results showing significant differences in these metrics at the 1-month and 4-month post-intervention marks 16.

Insulin Degludec did not show statistically significant changes in mean percent Time in Range, Coefficient of Variation of TIR, or Nocturnal Time in Range (70-180 mg/dL) 17.

Recent results — preliminary, needs further review

  • The AIDANET system showed significantly higher TIR during 18-hour hotel sessions compared to at-home settings (85.7% vs 71.7%, p=0.02) 1.
  • Tandem t:slim X2 with extended bolus demonstrated a TIR of approximately 71-73% and 0% time in hypoglycemia 2.
  • MPC closed-loop systems showed significantly lower incremental Area Under the Curve of postprandial glucose following the first meal (18.1 vs 20.9, p=0.017) 6.
  • Psychoeducation to reduce diabetes distress did not result in statistically significant improvements in TIR, A1c, or distress scores 3.

For the clinician treating this condition

  • Insulin Glargine and Insulin Degludec showed no statistically significant differences in primary glycemic metrics such as Time-in-Range or hypoglycemia duration compared to controls [14, 17].
  • Combination therapy of Insulin Degludec and Insulin Aspart resulted in higher instances of hyperglycemia (>180 mg/dL) but lower rates of hypoglycemia (<70 mg/dl) compared to the control group 19.
  • Advanced delivery systems like AIDANET showed significantly improved Time-in-Range during specific high-variability scenarios (e.g., hotel sessions) compared to at-home settings 1.
